其安易持，其未兆易谋。

其脆易泮，其微易散。

为之于未有，治之于未乱。

合抱之木，生于毫末；

九层之台，起于累土；

千里之行，始于足下。

为者败之，执者失之。

是以圣人无为，故无败；

无执，故无失。

民之从事，常于几成而败之。

慎终如始，则无败事。

是以圣人欲不欲，不贵难得之货；

学不学，复众人之所过。

以辅万物之自然而不敢为。

Interpretation

The teaching begins with simplicity: “What is at rest is easy to hold, what has not yet arisen is easy to plan for.” Deal with things before they form, solve problems before they appear. Fragile things are easy to break, small things easy to scatter — wisdom lies in acting early.

Then comes the famous imagery: “A tree that fills the arms grows from a tiny sprout. A nine-story tower rises from a basket of earth. A journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet.” Great things emerge from the smallest beginnings. Neglect them, and they grow beyond control; tend them early, and they remain easy.

“Forcing leads to failure, grasping leads to loss.” The sage practices wu wei — not forcing, not clinging — and thus avoids failure and loss. They approach both beginning and end with the same care, avoiding the common human error of growing careless when success seems near.

Finally, the sage does not chase rare treasures or clever knowledge but returns to the simplicity of ordinary truth. By aligning with the natural flow of things, they help all life flourish without imposing themselves.
