道者万物之奥。善人之宝，不善人之所保。

美言可以市尊，美行可以加人。

人之不善，何弃之有？

故立天子，置三公，虽有拱璧以先驷马，

不如坐进此道。

古之所以贵此道者何？

不曰以求得，有罪以免邪？

故为天下贵。

Interpretation

The Dao is the hidden treasure of all things. For those who are good, it is a precious jewel; for those who are not good, it is still a refuge. Dao does not abandon anyone.

When a great nation humbles itself before a small one, the small one is won over. When a small nation humbles itself before a great one, it gains protection. In both cases, harmony comes through yielding, not force.

The larger state desires to embrace and guide, the smaller state desires to belong and serve. When both receive what they seek, peace is possible. But for this to happen, the greater must be willing to lower itself.

The lesson is broader than politics: humility, not domination, builds enduring unity in all relationships.
