谷神不死，是谓玄牝。

玄牝之门，是谓天地根。

绵绵若存，用之不勤。

The “valley spirit” is the symbol of the Dao’s inexhaustibility. The valley is empty, receptive, and low, yet it never ceases to hold and nourish. This emptiness is not a lack but a source of endless vitality. Laozi calls it the “mysterious female,” the cosmic womb from which heaven and earth emerge.

By linking the Dao with femininity, Laozi emphasizes qualities often overlooked: softness, receptivity, humility, and quiet endurance.
