道生一，一生二，二生三，三生万物。

万物负阴而抱阳，冲气以为和。

人之所恶，唯孤、寡、不谷，而王公以为称。

故物，或损之而益之，或益之而损之。

人之所教，我亦教之：强梁者不得其死。

吾将以为教父。

Interpretation

Laozi begins with a vision of creation: the Dao gives birth to One—unity. From One comes Two—yin and yang. From Two comes Three—heaven, earth, and humanity, or the dynamic harmony between yin, yang, and balance. From this trinity, all things arise. Life itself unfolds from this cosmic rhythm.

Every being holds both yin and yang within, and harmony emerges through their interaction. Existence is woven from opposites—light and dark, male and female, soft and hard. Balance is the natural order of life.

Laozi then turns to humility. People often despise names like “orphaned,” “widowed,” or “unworthy,” yet the wise rulers of old embraced them. Why? Because by lowering themselves, they came closer to the Dao. In humility lies true strength.

He ends with a warning: those who are violent and domineering meet an early end. The Dao aligns with balance and humility, not with force or aggression.
