道冲，而用之或不盈。

渊兮，似万物之宗。

挫其锐，解其纷，

和其光，同其尘。

湛兮似或存。

吾不知谁之子，象帝之先。

Interpretation

The Dao is described as “冲”—empty, hollow, like a vessel that never fills. Though intangible, it is the inexhaustible source of all creation, the deep spring from which the myriad things emerge and to which they return. It is both subtle and vast, ungraspable yet ever-present.

The Dao has the power to soften sharpness, resolve confusion, harmonize brightness, and blend with the dust of the world. It transforms extremes into balance, diffuses conflict into stillness, and dwells both in brilliance and in ordinariness. This is its paradox: both exalted and humble, hidden yet all-pervading.

Finally, Laozi portrays the Dao as so ancient and fundamental that its origin cannot be known. “I do not know whose child it is,” he says, “yet it seems to precede the gods.” This emphasizes its timelessness—the Dao is the source before all sources, beyond human categories, older than heaven, earth, and divinity itself.
