Chapter 37 describes the Dao as always practicing non-action, yet leaving nothing undone. If rulers and people align with it, harmony will arise naturally, without force. The essence is that simplicity and stillness restore the world.

道常无为而无不为。

侯王若能守之，万物将自化。

化而欲作，吾将镇之以无名之朴。

镇之以无名之朴，夫将无欲。

不欲以静，天下将自正。

Interpretation

The Dao, Laozi says, always acts through wu wei—non-action. This does not mean inactivity, but action without struggle, forcing, or interference. By its very nature, the Dao accomplishes all things without striving.

If rulers could hold to this way, the world would naturally transform into harmony. People would not need coercion or endless laws, for life aligned with the Dao flows into order on its own.

When desires arise, Laozi advises “stilling them with nameless simplicity.” The uncarved block—plain, humble, whole—is the image of life before craving. By resting in simplicity, desire dissolves, and the heart returns to peace.

In this state of stillness and non-desire, the world finds stability. What force cannot impose, the Dao accomplishes through quiet presence. This is the hidden strength of non-action.

With Chapter 37, we complete the first half of the Tao Te Ching — the Dao Jing (道经, Book of the Dao). The Dao Jing teaches us how the Way itself moves — through stillness, reversal, humility, and non-action.

When life feels complicated, return to simplicity. By letting go of excess desire and allowing things to unfold naturally, you create space for harmony to emerge on its own.
