This chapter is one of the most profound in the Tao Te Ching. It speaks of the mysterious, eternal presence of Dao — formless yet mother of all things, beyond time and space yet moving through everything. 有物混成，先天地生。

寂兮寥兮，独立而不改，周行而不殆，可以为天地母。

吾不知其名，强字之曰道，强为之名曰大。

大曰逝，逝曰远，远曰反。

故道大，天大，地大，人亦大。

域中有四大，而人居其一焉。

人法地，地法天，天法道，道法自然。

Interpretation

Laozi describes something ancient, beyond Heaven and Earth, silent and vast, unchanging yet moving ceaselessly. This is the Dao — the mother of all things. It cannot be named directly, so we call it “Dao,” and we call it “great.”

He then describes the movement of greatness: “Great goes forth, goes far, and returns.” True greatness does not remain fixed or stagnant. It flows outward, extends beyond limits, and then returns to its source. This rhythm mirrors the cycles of life, seasons, and the universe itself.

Dao is great, Heaven is great, Earth is great, and human beings too are great. Within the universe, these four powers shape all existence. Humanity is included — not above Dao, but as one among the great forces. This gives humans dignity, but also a responsibility to live in harmony with the larger order.

The closing lines show the chain of alignment: people follow the Earth, Earth follows Heaven, Heaven follows Dao, and Dao follows what is natural. This is the heart of Laozi’s teaching: all things are rooted in Dao, and Dao itself aligns with the effortless unfolding of nature.
