希言自然。

故飘风不终朝，骤雨不终日。

孰为此者？天地。

天地尚不能久，而况于人乎？

故从事于道者，道者同于道；

德者同于德；

失者同于失。

同于道者，道亦乐得之；

同于德者，德亦乐得之；

同于失者，失亦乐得之。

信不足焉，有不信焉。

Interpretation

Laozi advises that few words align with nature. Just as strong winds and heavy rain do not last long, forceful speech and actions soon burn themselves out. Endurance belongs to what is gentle, natural, and quiet.

Even heaven and earth, vast as they are, cannot sustain extremes for long. How much more so for humans? Therefore, the sage does not strain or force but allows words and deeds to remain simple and aligned with the Dao.

Laozi then describes three kinds of alignment: those who follow the Dao are at one with the Dao; those who live by virtue are at one with virtue; those who stray into loss are at one with loss. The Dao embraces all impartially—where you dwell, there you will be nourished.

Finally, he warns that where there is a lack of trust, suspicion arises. The sage cultivates trust not by demanding it, but by being trustworthy, consistent, and aligned with the Dao. In this way, harmony is restored.
