载营魄抱一，能无离乎？

专气致柔，能婴儿乎？

涤除玄览，能无疵乎？

爱民治国，能无为乎？

天门开阖，能为雌乎？

明白四达，能无知乎？

生之、畜之，生而不有也，

为而不恃也，

长而不宰也，

是谓玄德。

Interpretation

This chapter presents a series of questions, each pointing toward the qualities of one who embodies the Dao. Can you hold the unity of body and spirit without separation? Can you remain supple and innocent like a newborn child? Can you cleanse perception until it sees clearly without flaw? These questions invite us to examine our depth of alignment with the Dao.

The sage is described as loving the people and governing without imposing. He is likened to the feminine, yielding and receptive, yet powerful in his humility. By opening and closing like the “gate of heaven,” he flows with the rhythms of nature, never forcing, always yielding.

Wisdom, for Laozi, is not cleverness. Even when one is clear and knowledgeable, the sage remains humble, not clinging to superiority. He nurtures life, supports growth, acts and achieves, yet never claims possession. This is called “玄德”—mysterious virtue, power that arises from alignment rather than control.

Chapter 10 thus paints a picture of leadership and living rooted in softness, humility, and presence. The sage’s greatness lies in not clinging, not possessing, not controlling, but in allowing life to flourish through him.
