信言不美，美言不信。

善者不辩，辩者不善。

知者不博，博者不知。

圣人不积，既以为人己愈有，

既以与人己愈多。

天之道，利而不害；

圣人之道，为而不争。

Interpretation

Laozi begins with paradoxes that overturn common values:

• Words that are true may not sound sweet, while words that sound sweet are often not true.
• The truly good do not need to argue; those who argue endlessly are rarely rooted in goodness.
• Real wisdom is not about collecting endless facts, but about seeing clearly what matters.

This challenges us to look past the surface. Truth is not decoration. Goodness is not show. Wisdom is not accumulation. What is genuine is often quiet, modest, and easy to overlook.

The sage lives by this understanding. They do not hoard wealth or cling to possessions, yet by giving freely, they always have more. They do not withhold themselves from others, yet the more they share, the richer their life becomes. This is abundance beyond the material — the abundance of alignment with Dao.

Finally, Laozi lifts our eyes to the highest pattern: “The way of Heaven benefits all things and does not harm. The way of the sage acts without competing.” This is the great lesson of the Dao — life sustains, gives, and flows without force. The sage mirrors this by living generously, acting without striving, and allowing their presence to nourish others quietly.

This closing chapter is both a conclusion and an invitation: to live plainly, humbly, generously — and in doing so, to discover the inexhaustible fullness of Dao.
