大成若缺，其用不弊。

大盈若冲，其用不穷。

大直若屈，大巧若拙，大辩若讷, 大赢若绌。

躁胜寒，静胜热。

清静为天下正。

Interpretation

The first lines present a deep paradox: “Great accomplishment seems incomplete, yet its usefulness never fails.” This points to the Dao’s way—true greatness often hides in what appears imperfect. The vessel that looks empty is inexhaustible; the person who seems simple holds boundless depth.

Then Laozi continues: “Great straightness seems bent, great skill seems clumsy, great eloquence seems slow.” This teaching overturns conventional judgment. Those who appear most gifted may lack depth, while those who seem awkward may embody true mastery. The Dao expresses itself not in showy perfection, but in quiet authenticity.

The second part speaks of balance: “Agitation conquers cold, stillness conquers heat.” This is not only about physical conditions but the states of life and spirit. Restlessness can drive away stagnation, but ultimately stillness brings the highest harmony. The Daoist path values inner calm, which restores balance to all extremes.

The final line, “Through clarity and stillness, the world is set right,” sums up the essence. True order arises not from control or force, but from embodying clarity, quietness, and balance.
