Chapter 20 is one of the most intimate passages in the Tao Te Ching. Here Laozi steps out of abstraction and speaks in his own voice, contrasting himself with the noisy, striving world around him. The essence is that to live the Dao is to walk a path that seems strange and lonely to others, yet it is in this difference that true alignment with the Source is found.

唯之与阿，相去几何？善之与恶，相去若何？

人之所畏，不可不畏。

荒兮，其未央哉！

众人熙熙，如享太牢，如春登台。

我独泊兮，其未兆；

若婴儿之未孩；

儽儽兮，若无所归。

众人皆有余，而我独若遗。

我愚人之心也哉！

俗人昭昭，我独昏昏。

俗人察察，我独闷闷。

澹兮其若海，飂兮若无止。

众人皆有以，而我独顽且鄙。

我独异于人，而贵食母。

Interpretation

Laozi begins by questioning distinctions—yes and no, good and evil—and wonders how far apart they truly are. He admits that what people fear cannot be dismissed lightly, but already we sense his distance from the common worldview. His opening lines suggest the futility of endless judgment and division.

He then looks at society: people bustle with joy, celebrating, feasting, climbing stages, chasing entertainments. The crowd feels full and alive, carried away by worldly pleasures. Against this backdrop, Laozi describes himself as utterly different—quiet, uncertain, like an infant not yet laughing, like a wanderer without a home.

He confesses that while others seem to overflow with abundance, he feels as if left behind, foolish, and muddled. Others appear bright, sharp, and clever, while he feels dim and dull. Yet this dullness is not despair—it is spaciousness. He likens his heart to the ocean, vast and unending, to the wind, moving without limit. He does not fit the world because he is attuned to a different rhythm.

In his closing words, Laozi reveals the reason: “I alone am different from others, because I cherish the Mother.” While the world pursues abundance, clarity, and cleverness, he treasures the Source, the nourishing root of all. His estrangement from society is not weakness but devotion to the Dao.
