三十辐，共一毂，当其无，有车之用。

埏埴以为器，当其无，有器之用。

凿户牖以为室，当其无，有室之用。

Interpretation

Laozi begins with the image of a wheel: thirty spokes converge on a single hub, yet it is the empty center that makes the wheel turn. The solid spokes exist, but without the space between them, the wheel is useless. This emptiness is not absence, but function itself—it is the invisible heart of usefulness.

He continues with the metaphor of clay shaped into a vessel. The clay provides the structure, but it is the hollow within that makes it useful. A pot with no space inside cannot hold water; a cup without emptiness cannot contain tea. Thus, what seems void is the very reason the vessel serves its purpose.

The same truth applies to a house. Doors and windows are cut into walls not to destroy them, but to make them livable. The walls provide stability, but the empty openings create the dwelling space. Without them, the house is merely stone and wood.

Through these examples, Laozi shows the interdependence of presence and absence. Form and emptiness are not opposites but partners. The visible gives structure, while the invisible gives function. By clinging only to what is “there,” we miss the subtle power of what is “not there.”
